Insanity is doing things the same way and expecting different results.

Should soldiers under 21 be allowed to legally drink?

Should soldiers under 21 be allowed to legally drink?

If you're old enough to die for your country, aren't you old enough to drink?

That's a very good question, and I agree with your position, and would like to bring to attention another aspect of the problem.

Put alcohol aside for one moment - what about the right to vote? Shouldn't an 18-years-old soldier be entitled to vote, and have his influence on the political arena in which it will be decided if, when and where this soldier will be deployed? If he can die for his country, why can't he participate in the procedure that might send him to his death?

In Israel, where I live, young men and women must serve a mandatory military service, to which they are drafted at the age of 18. That's one of the reasons that Israel's law sets the age of 18 not only as the draft age, but also as the age from which young men can purchase alcohol, nicotine and also - vote. If a young man is not a minor as far as military service is concerned, he's not a minor as far as other things are concerned. There are, of course, exceptions to that rule (driver's license can be issued at the age of 17, the criminal responsibility age is 12).

I have often thought about this issue. It does not make much sense that in the United States an 18 year old can be given a gun and sent into war but cannot go out and buy himself a beer. It's difficult to comprehend. I also think that part of the issue of alcoholism springing up at younger ages is that the drinking age is set to 21. Young people tend to rebel, and do what they are told not to. If it were easier for them to access alcohol legally at a more reasonable age, I think they would be less likely to binge (as they are illegally now). I think that it's part of human nature for young people to think that it's more fun to break the rules, and when breaking them, why not give it their best?!?!

Actually, in America, when a person turns 18-years-old, he legally has the right to vote; the only thing he cannot legally do is buy or drink alcohol.

Roee, where have you been for the past thirty-five years?  In America, ALL 18-year-old citizens have the same right to vote as anyone else.

And for your information, every base has Enlisted Clubs so that ANY fighting man or woman has the right to a cold beer.

Drunk on duty, that's still an old-fashioned Artticle 186, and I have taken stripes off of Marines who were old enough to know better than to get wasted in the club.

BTW, Officers' Clubs have the same provision, as do Staff Clubs.

Why, then, do you demand to persecute servicemen and servicewomen?
