When installing IE7, your previous version will be replaced by the new installation, therefore you need not remove the old one.

No, you do not. However, I'd caution you because I had some very negative events occur due to the upgrades (not on all machines I tried, but certainly on some, mainly dealing with security-related issues which had nothing to do with IE), so if you get some strange stuff all of a sudden - uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and IE6 will then become active again. But if everything else works fine - use it, it's certainly much nicer than the old version on many levels. Of course, I still recommend Firefox to people, especially if IE7 fails to work correctly.

There is no such thing as a stupid question,not having the correct answer is inexcusabile.
If your re-installing ie to fix a problem that keeps it from operating correctly.You have to remove the old version first to get a clean install and have the new ie 7 work.But if you are just upgrading your ie (ie -7 to ie-8) then you dont need to remove any earlier programs.Always download and install any new windows software from microsoft site and you will see less cases of installed items not working like they should,since before the program is fianalized the download will run a scan to verify that all installed items were done correctly and there is no conflicts.
