Extremely simple - they are stuck between the drum and the body of the washing machine. then they decide it is boring for them, so they go to help Marco find his mom. what can be simpler then that?
There's a far away land called the Lost Socks Land, and all socks secretly aspire to go there. Actually I think Disney Studios are planning on a new movie, entitled "Free Socko" about a small sock trying to pave its way to freedom.

Makes sense
It doesn't matter where they are now because when we die we get back everything we lost in life. As long as you can manage to misplace the other sock as well then you'll have no worries about keeping your toes warm in the afterlife.
