Should Jews participate in Halloween festivities? Growing up in Brooklyn, it was all about the candy. Now I'm hearing from our community that we should not participate because Halloween has satanic overtones. I believe that my 7 year old girl shouldn't be excluded from "trick or treat" activities nor from the Halloween parties that we have been invited to. What do you think? Thanks.

As far as I am concerned, Halloween is about getting dressed up and asking for candy. It was always one of my favourite holidays growing up, and I am Jewish! I say let your daughter enjoy it as well!!

Halloween has no satanic overtones. This is propaganda from Christians and others that hate and are prejudiced against anything that isn't Christian oriented.

Haloween was originally a pagan celebration, All Hallow's Eve, also Hallowe'en is the original old english. Unless you happen to be a pagan, it's no longer any kind of religious celebration, It has evolved to just be a fun holiday, and unless there's some prohibition in the Torah that I don't know of against Halloween, there's no reason you shouldn't enjoy the party.

And no, pagans are NOT satanists. If the people who believe this knew anything at all about the religion they would know that pagans do not believe in satan in any way. Satan is a Christian invention.

Opinions on Halloween with respect to Judaism vary as greatly as the Christian views. In one of his sermons had ruled against any involvement of Jews on Halloween, stating that trick or treating is an imitation of the gentiles that should not be allowed. Halloween has become more and more secular, emphasizing that celebrating it is no different from celebrating New Year’s Day. According to Rabbi Stahl, synagogues, Jewish schools and other organizations should not mark Halloween officially, but when it comes to the privacy of one’s own home, celebrating such a day is permissible as long as Jewish ideals are upheld.
