If you gave them the money as a gift, you shouldn't really try to control what they want to do with it.

A gift is just that...a gift. The gift becomes theirs to do what they want with it. Having said that, and keeping in mind that your child IS an adult, you might tell him simply how you feel about whatever it is he wants to spend the money on, but then, it is up to him what he does with it.

I am sorry to say that once a child reaches his majority, 18 or 21 and you gave him money, there is no way to stop him from spending it. You should have had an adendum that stipulated such restrictions. Michael Joel Held
