There are two excellent books I would recommend, both by the same author, Mary Hunt.

You can find them in your library or at any bookstore.  I love these books so much because they teach you how to live within your means and (as she puts it) stretch a dollar until it screams.  Her idea is simple:  By spending less and socking what you don't spend into a savings account, you can plan for emergencies and unexpected expenses (such as property taxes, etc) on your ordinary income without having to resort to credit card debt.

You must have a vision that you will live long enough to need money when you are older and you must face the reality that the government will not bail you out. The Social "Security" I get is a joke. I can not understand how anyone survives on the amount the government gives without help from other sources.
Personally, I am nearing 65 and I am not relying on Social Security for my income. Having lived a comfortable life. I am the product of the advice I give and I am enjoying life rather than fearing the future.
What if your boss told you they are done using you and your employment is ended? If you are self employed and you did not have the vision to spend the money for disability insurance should you have an issue that prevents you from performing and you can not survive on the government plan for your future, what will you do? Go to a free public library and ask the reference librarian to help you locate a source for a recording of  "The Strangest Secret" by Earl Nightingale. "The Strangest Secret" will give you information, common sense and principals that will explain why you are at the level you are at at this point in your life.
