Why skyscrapers aren't getting much higher ?

It seems like all the new skyscrapers that are been built are around the same height , why no one builds a three or four thousand feet buildings ?

Conceptual supertall designs, such as The Illinois by Frank Lloyd Wright (image, right), X-Seed 4000, and Sky City 1000 are probably technologically and architecturally feasible, but are considered by some to be simply too tall to be of any particular use. Critics suggest that the current world economic situation does not require such a massive concentration of people and capital and, after the occurrence of the September 11, 2001 attacks, fear that such towers will almost certainly become terrorist targets

NOVA Optical Tricks of the Parthenon PBS

Ancient Greek architects were on to something when they built the Parthenon with subtle curves and no right angles. While it remains debatable, some scholars argue that these features were intended to counter the brain's tendency to see optical illusions. http://www.pbs.org/nova/parthenon Watch "Secrets of the Parthenon" Tuesday, January 29 at 8pm ET/PT on PBS (check local listings).
