How do you "shoot" (with a shotgun) a well (a water well)?

My Mom keeps talking about how her Grandfather used to "shoot the well" when the water production went down using a shotgun, and I was wondering if anyone knows how to actually do this safely. Our water pressure has dropped by about 40% and she is convinced this is what is needed. I am a bit dubious.

I never heard of this, and shotgun pellets won't go very far through water and sand. Maybe this is a nickname or metaphor for what he was doing to clean out the well, or he was shooting new holes into the liner to let water in.

But hey, if my mother wanted to shoot a shotgun down our well I'd let her, whether I thought it would work or not. I'll be watching this question to see what people have to say.
