No septic systems

I am trying to notify the DNR of 3 cottages on our lake, built in 1948 that do not have any septic systems at all. Who do I notify?

If you are in the States, it would be the department of Health.  Call for building codes and planning department, ask them for the health department of building and planning.  You should really contact the people in these places first.  they may have a grandfather clause that excuses them.  You may want to ask them to install composting toilets rather than insist on septic, which could be a real mess, leaching all that broken earth into your lake, and the leach fields for septic still leach into the lake too, OR maybe these people would be forced to sell their homes due to an inability to pay for septic and a troubles soul may come and kill you for destroying their lives.

Just because you think you know best, you might cause a lot of pain and grief; I really recommend communication FIRST.  If these people are dumping shit straight into your fishing/ swimming area and don't want to stop, and don't care, then you know you have the law to back your rights.  that's what i think.

Hi,

do a web search for the dept of natural resources in your state; you can type in DNR and hit search and go from there. If the cottages were built before 1948, they may not have been required to have a septic system, especially in a remote location. Chances are, unless you stay right near one of these cottages, its not going to cause a problem; but, I wouldn't want to live in a home or cottage that didn't have a good working septic system. You could also contact a county health insepector; that is who I'd call if it were a local issue here, for it is the local inspectors who issue building permits and do the approvals on septic systems, electrical hook ups, etc. Hope this helps, Mark Savage

Thank you for your reply. Something is actually happening at one cottage. The building inspector blocked off the property across their street that they were using for a toilet. The cottage should never been built to begin with. In 1948, they could build whatever they wanted without any inspections. The cottage is only 30 ft. from the lake and it should be 45 ft., there is no room even for a holding tank. The owners only come out for the 4th of July week. This past holiday, they did rent a port-to-san, thank God and we did talk to the owner. She told me it was none of my buisness. Now it is. I have also notified our lake association. They were thrilled that I was doing something. The next cottage that I am targeting, discharges sewage right into the lake with an underground pipe. Just discusting, tampons and all. It's ruining the value of our lake property, it has to stop. Those owners never got or are on the list from the County to get their yearly septic cleaned out, like the rest of us have to, they don't have a septic. I will continue in my quest. Thanks for the reply. ercndcrl@aol.com.

In regard to your post saying that: "The next cottage that I am targeting, discharges sewage right into the lake with an underground pipe. Just disgusting, tampons and all. It's ruining the value of our lake property, it has to stop."
I'd think you're right for trying to get this practice to stop; no one should be dumping raw sewage or untreated waste directly in a public body of water of any kind. Keep up your fight to stop this practice; glad to know someone willing to stand against this type of "crap." If there were more like you, this world would be a much cleaner place. We only have the one earth and if we don't take care of it now, our children and grandchildren will inherit all the mess we leave for them.
