It depends on the website - if you generate a lot of hits you can make some extra cash but setting text in ads. A lot of people do that those days so I guess it does work as a way to generate money.

From what I know the rates are measured by numbers of hits on your site, and you get more money the more people go into your site (measured by thousand).

Yes it works, if you mean in terms of making money. Some webmasters think it's invasive, but I think it is a clever way of advertising

Yes!

 Also,

I’ve been using some very EZ ideas to get high ranking sites to provide backlinks to my blogs and sites.  So far, my Adsense income is up over 25%!

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a set of methods aiming to improve the ranking of a website in search engine listings, and can be considered a subset of search engine marketing. Some commentators, and even some SEOs, break down methods used by practitioners into categories such as "white hat SEO" (methods generally approved by search engines, such as building content and improving site quality), or "black hat SEO" (tricks such as cloaking and spamdexing). White hatters charge that black hat methods are an attempt to manipulate search rankings unfairly. Black hatters counter that all SEO is an attempt to manipulate rankings, and that the particular methods one uses to rank well are irrelevant. Search engines such as Yahoo! and Google will take action against the sites found to have used blsck hat methods including dropping them down the list. The best way in the long term is to make your site useful to users.
