I live in a small town in Texas. My wife on her computer gets different results than I do. Why is that? I also remember the time when everyone got the same results. Not doubting your reasoning. You make sense but I think there are more variables. Seems like the changes started when Google started saving each persons search history.

It's because most major search engines (for sure Google) have many different data centers (server locations) that they serve up information from.

Search history could be an issue as well.

One of the major factors which Google is doing at the moment is bringing back results based on your location, so if you and your wife are running off two different ip numbers, this may have something to do with it.

You, or your wife might also be 'signed in' to Google or whatever engine you are using, which might be using past search results that you have clicked on as reference when delivering your results.
