Can't send mail with attachment

When I send email with attachment the attached file is not readable a red x is next to the attached file.

I am just learning how to do things on the computer and i spent a hour trying to do it.  I went aol information about

E mail ---attachments   it will tell you.

Also are you attaching a folder.  On your e mail after you bring up the folder on the bottom of e mail it said's it.
