I agree... I think it's a very good idea to do exactly what you're doing.  To read and understand, and to not get upset with him.  I would write him a letter telling him that you are not upset, that you understand that he needs this time, and that you thought he'd be interested in this information that you've found.  Also, let him know that you will be patient and will be ready to talk and spend time when he is ready.
