Before we answer that question, we must determine if the tree really exists. If we can't see it, touch or smell it, how do we know it is really there?

Karma's a b*tch.

God can hear it. He's everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

NOTICE: By the time you have noticed this notice, you will have noticed that this notice is not worth noticing.

By definition, sound is the vibration of air (or other medium such as water or solids).  Likewise, hearing is the perception of such vibrations.  Therefore, a tree (or any other object) falling makes these vibrations, and thus sound.  Whether there is anyone (or any other living thing) around to hear it is irrelevant.

Nice question, but the answer is simpler than you might think:

If you define sound as an objective phenomena, then yes, the falling tree creates a sound, regardless of whether or not there's  someone to hear it.

If you define sound as a subjective experience, then no, since there's no one to experience the sound.
