Geologists say that mountains with sharp, jagged peaks are newly formed. Mountains which have rounded peaks have been formed much earlier. Can you think of the reason for this?

I was late for work this morning, because I got stuck in Zeno's paradox

The mountain peaks are eroded by wind, sand and water. The erosion causes the peaks to become smoother and rounder. The longer a peak exists the longer it is exposed to the forces of erosion, and therefore will be smoother and rounder as compared to younger peaks that have not been exposed to the forces of erosion so much.

Love is the battery of life....

Hi,

MakeTheKnife's answer is perfect.  I would like to emphasize that erossion is an extremely slow process (Takes many generations !).
And the term "young mountain" migh be miss-leading as well:  When a geologist refers to a "young mountan" he means several hundreds (if not thousands) years.....
Best regards,

The earth's surface is made up of sections called plates. These plates are being pushed in certain directions by the action of volcanos and by pressure deep down in the earth. As the plates move they push against each other, and this causes some parts of the plate to be pushed upwards, thereby causing a mountain to be formed.

Strike Hard / Strike Home

Pressure from tectonic plates are what cause mountains to appear to start with.  Mountains are always highest and sharpest near the boundry of these plates.
