Is it safe for a woman to travel on her own in India?

I recently got back from Goa. I was there for two weeks and absolutely loved it. I intend to go back at the end of this year for a couple of months and I need to know if it is safe for me to travel on my own in South India. I'm a single female age 33....have just fallen in love with the place and desparate to get back out there...all safety advice much appreciated!

Hi Annette

South India is generally quite safe for travellers (yay!). I live in Chennai and I can tell you it is quite safe for foreigners, especially women. Spots like Pondicherry, Kerala, Mysore, Tanjore -- all touristy places -- are quite safe for travellers.

The biggest safety threat comes not from humans but microbes:-)) Ensure that you drink only packaged water.

Have a blast! India rocks!

A friend of mine, 26 years old girl, just got back from a 4 month trip all over India. Part of the time she spent alone, and the rest with a friend (also a girl).

From my experience (although gained in South America, but I heard it's not really different all over the globe), even if you're traveling on your own, you're not really alone, and you can always hook up with people you meet along the way, and part from them when you just feel like it.

Yes, I would definitely say you are fine in Pondicheery, Chennai and Bangalore from my experience.  I'd say it's less safety problems, you may need to clear some cultural gaps as people understand you and your motivations.  India is one of my favorite places in the world and hope you have you have a great time on your next trip!
