No day in which you learn something is a complete loss.

A. You can take a course (no shortcuts here)

B. You can use Rosetta Stone which is a pretty good software for learning languages (although it's not very cheap). Here is a review of the Russian version.

I studied Russian many years ago; it is quite a difficult language because of its grammar that is similar to German. It was a two-proged course, based on the U.S. Army Monterrey method which called for sitting in a language lab listeneing to recordings to develop an ear for the langage and classroom sessions for speaking (no English allowed) vocabulary and grammar. If you have an affinity for foreign languages you have an advantage.

If you are uncomfortable learning from a computer program, as some people are, you may try and find a book+CD set in a general music or book store, there are courses from various sources in various methods- just have a look and see what works for you. I'm in the middle of such a course right now and it's been very effective for me.
