First of all we'll have to start saving energy (by using more public transportation, building energy-efficient buildings, better layout of our cities and so on) but I don't think it's going to be enough. We'll have to start using a lot more nuclear power than we do today, as much as we don't like it. Other alternatives (solar energy, wind power, ocean waves and so on) are not efficient enough yet, and I don't know when they will be.

The code, the code! give me the code !

What you can really do is start saving by yourself. Don't wait that someone will redesign a city, don't wait for someone to build new power plant... look at your self and start cutting extra costs, useless energy waste, useless use of gasoline !

For personal use, gasoline affect the car fuel tank (but not just that..), however:

You may try to search in your area for a bikeshop, ask for electrical assisted bikes! when you get to the mall, try to stock as much as you can so you can save the next week a trip and half the use of gasoline for feeding purpose. Look at your place of work and ask (if possible) if you can get there with public transport, with a friend's car or if a moped is enough for your transport (na, i didn't said bicicle because you would be targetted as too muh green...).

IF you have to change the car look also for diesel ones, the new common rail direct injection, buy a lightweight car ! 2 tons to move 70kg of your body may not appear so efficient... never get revs over 3500rpm, never engage turbo, try to keep the highest gear possible, never exceed 100km/h: the faster you go, the more gasoline you burn.

Never fill you tank at the maximum ! it's useless to carry 100kg of gasoline, keep at 30%,the less the weight, the more efficent is your power figure.

This is just for car related savings, there are thousands of other energy waste where gasoline is affected even if not directly... it's up to everybody judment to decide what to do.Alternative there will be... but at what price? will you be able to buy "green" hydrogen for 4-8 time the price of actual gasoline? your budget will permit you to move in a gasoline free-greener world? think now and save for the future.

I think we are going to have to come up with an engine that runs on sea water.

There are some alternatives like ethanol , bio-fuels which are still under development.

Most of the ideas posted before are correct we will have to reduce our  fuel consumption and we are going to have to use these alternatives.

By the way producing light weight cars is also a way to reduce fuel consumption.

We can't fix it by replenishing the oil we've consumed but we can try to not use oil.  Every year cars get more fuel efficient and although it's not the greatest solution they are finding things like bioethanol can dilute our oil consumption
