I live in the woods so my house tends to be dark inside. I keep all the walls and appliances in light colors. The floors are red oak hardwood and the brick fireplace enclosure which is ceiling high with a seating ledge is a warm /pink/orange/brown.
No carpet, but a modern rug with a seaside pink sand/grey water/turquoise sea sculpted into it. My furniture picks up those colors in every room and can be moved easily from room to room depending on my desires. No sofas. Deep comfortable chairs and ottomans.
2 "chair and a half" pieces which make into twin beds.Chairs that swivel and rock and can be turned to see the dining room or the living room. The dining room and all wood furniture is country French in style. No draperies.
A Mackinac Island/Cotswold cottage look with pitchers of fresh flowers. Lots of comfortable pillows are on the seating ledge by the fire. Book cases filled with books bring in any dark colors that the rooms need to frame the pastels.
Antique maps are framed and on the walls along with some antique postcards/advertising ephermia.I like the old worn look of antique paper products. Lots of throws in the same colors.
With no draperies needed, the rich fall color of the leaves warms up the rooms, and in summer the cool greens blend in with the indoor pinks/blues/greens.
Winter is my challenge because the stark white snow covered trees, while beautiful, can make my rooms look too cool. I change to pretty deep red and camel throws on the furniture and make sure the fire is glowing. Christmas decorations warm things up also. So far, so good.
