Adding halogen or fluorescent fixtures to your room will make an enormous difference in the quality of light. Halogen is a bright, white light with a clean glow that will illuminate your walls and work surfaces without distorting colors in the room. There are relatively inexpensive fixtures (xenon) that can be installed where your regular ceiling light is located. Small track kits with directional lighting are now as inexpensive in some cases as regular ceiling lights. (We're talking $24, $48 to start)

Of course, using lots of table and floor lamps and loading them up with the highest wattage possible is key. And, if you want to go the green route by loading all your lighting fixtures and lamps with fluorescent bulbs, then you will be able to enjoy the byproduct of that type of bulb, which is bright, white light. Fluorescent bulbs last months, if not years, longer than the regular bulbs anyway. Can't beat that!
Oh, and undercabinet lighting helps out in the kitchen as well. Try plug-in strips - that come in fluorescent, halogen, incandescent, even LED - or small lamps to add to the functional light.
