I've seen shingle roofing professionally installed that gives a bit of a reveal between shingle vertically. The overlap exposes a bit on the non-graveled portion. Seems like the shingles should be installed with more overlap. It would cost more (more material) but wouldn't it be a better quality installation if the tiles were closer together? Even more densely installed than the manufacturers specification perhaps?
I was wondering why the baseball kept getting bigger.
Then it hit me.
Shingle roofing materials are designed for a perfict fit, giving even coverage without being lumpy or uneven. I would guess that the "reveal" you are talking about is from how it looks standing on the roof. From the ground you can't see it, and it will look "just right". If you were to overlap the tiles more than they are designed for, you will still have a good installation, but it won't be better, and from the ground the look will feel a bit cramped, but a person wouldn't quite know why. One last thing, installing with too much overlap can make it more difficult to stay on a straight line, requiring you to snap a new chalk line more often.
Hope that helps!

It is possible, and this is assuming you are using the term 'professional' in the most liberal sense, that the shingles were stretched vertically as they were laid from the eave edge to the peak of the slope. This would be done to cut down on the amount of material used and should have been used for a proper application. I have run into this situation with both 3-tab and architectural shingles. This will compromise the integrity of the roof and may lead to premature leaks.
