What do ridges on the fingernails indicate?

What are ridges on the fingernails supposed to indicate?  I have some vertical ridges, running from bottom to top.  I have been told that this is an indicator of something, but I can't remember.

I have some pitting or left to right ridges on the nails which a doctor had told me had some relationship to my diabetes because the nails were also brittle. I've also read that the fingernails can tell medical doctors a great deal about us.

This is an indivation that you were almost certainly abducted by aliens as a child. The pattern is very similar to bar codes and is used much in the same way to determine what you are worth on the open alien market. As we age our skin, hair, nails, etc begin to thin and the implants are much more readily visible. I anticipation of your follow up question: No, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. They blog this information on Aol and it is forever.

well, I still have mine, I'm still alive, and I am still stage 4e Non-hogekins lymphoma, B cell sub category mantle cell cancer with bone marrow involvement. The Dr. said my prognosis was 6 months to 18 months back in Feb, 07 and I am still here, in exactly the same condition. I guess after Aug. 1st this year I will be on borrowed time. I started taking DCA (Dichloroacetate) 2 weeks ago, and amazingly, my symptoms have gone away. Hopefully it will kill the cancer cells and I will get better. Wish me Luck!

I had a friend that was a nail technician.  I had asked her the same question.  I wanted to know why my fingernails had those lines.  "They just grow that way."  Walgreens sells a manicure set by Red.  By the more expensive one...the one that you plug in.  It has several attachments, and directions on how to use it.  I think it is about $15.  You can file and buff your nails smooth.  Just be careful.  If you over do the filing, you can file away your nail.  You can file it too much, and it will become paper thin.

Have you had your thyroid tested? I have those lines also and my nails are very strong. I was told they come from thyroid problems.

I've been told that they are more prevalent as you get older. You can pretty much make them disappear, if they bother you, with a good buffing file.
