What do ridges on the fingernails indicate?

What are ridges on the fingernails supposed to indicate?  I have some vertical ridges, running from bottom to top.  I have been told that this is an indicator of something, but I can't remember.

I am a manicurist and I get this question all the time. Nails that split, peel or crack can be caused from all kinds of things. Some basic things are poor nutrition, lack of fluids, medication, weather, etc. It is really hard to give you a clear accurate answer. The best advise that I can give is to use a good moisturizing lotion-avoid one with petroleum products. A good one to use is Mavala moisturizing lotion. Drink plenty of water, take a good multi-vitamin, and wear gloves in cold weather. Now obviously if you take medicine on a daily basis there is nothing you can do about this. Oh one more thing, wear a Zoya polish to keep them protected. The Zoya brand is a very mild polish that is free of a lot of the bad things that most polishes contain. Hope this helps-Kim
