What do ridges on the fingernails indicate?

What are ridges on the fingernails supposed to indicate?  I have some vertical ridges, running from bottom to top.  I have been told that this is an indicator of something, but I can't remember.

Sometimes people get ridges from having a virus,or a fever, others could be from a lack of vitamins. I recently had a really bad flu and a month later realized i had  a funny ridge in my nail. It is going away though.

They sometimes come with age.

As you get older the nails changes.

There are some many reasons , its best to see a doctor and see if you need treatment.

I am so sorry to hear about your serious illness and how it was diagnosed.

Thank you for taking the time to detail it and place it here as a warning to everyone on this site.

I too have these ridges and wondered what they were caused from.

I'm five years older than you.  What a terrible shock you must have received.  How are you doing now?  If you ever need to email me, please feel free.  jeweldee@xnets.co.za.  I'd be happy to keep in touch with you and offer what support I can.

Some are considered bruses under the nail, others show a high dosage of arsnic in the system or other forms of proteins/minerals/chemicals. I would get a doctors opinion if they are persistent or do not go away.
