What do ridges on the fingernails indicate?

What are ridges on the fingernails supposed to indicate?  I have some vertical ridges, running from bottom to top.  I have been told that this is an indicator of something, but I can't remember.

these ridges might have been caused by a trama u have recieved to your nail or finger as just under ur cuticle is where your nail cells provide nail growth or it may have been by a past illness u have had that shows a time u may have been deficient in nutrients.i hope this has helped.

Some vertical ridges indicate a virus infection - harmless but possibly unsightely to some.

I also have vertical ridges so I looked it up and found out that it could mean that you have a lack of zink, poor nutrition, kidney problems ,or may eventually get arthritis. Hope I helped Smile

What do ridges on the fingernail indicate?

It could be 1 of 2 things but both the result of illness or injury.

Corrugations or wavy ridges are caused by uneven growth of the nail, usually the result of illness or injury.

Furrows (depressions) in the nails can run either lengthwise or across the nail. These are also usually the result of illness or injury to the nail cells in or near the matrix. They can also be caused by pregnancy or stress. Since these nails are exceedingly fragile, take great care when giving manicure. Avoid using metal pusher. Use a cotton-tipped orangewood stick around the cuticle.
