How to get rid of sandburs safely?

My son's school playground is infested with sandburs. Does anyone know how to get rid of them quickly & safely without using harmful chemicals around the children? If anyone can help it will be greatly appreciated by all of the elementary students, parents, and staff!  Thank you!!!
