Sometimes pets accidentally bring some friends home to play, and those friends happen to be tiny, blood-sucking, and persistent. Here's how to get rid of the unwelcome guests. See Image

Steps
  1. Throw all of the pet bedding in the washing machine. That includes anything that the pets like to regularly lie or sleep on, which isn't always intended to serve as pet bedding. Does Fido love to nap on that throw rug in the living room? Wash it. Does Fluffy enjoy lounging on the doiley on the coffee table? Wash it. Wash it all - the bedsheets, the throw on the sofa, the bathroom rug.
  2. Spray an insect growth regulator (IGR) like methoprene or pyriproxyfen. Room foggers (total release aerosols) aren't as effective as sprays unless they contain an IGR to prevent the larvae from turning into adult fleas. Without IGRs, larvae won't be controlled because they won't be reached at the base of carpet fibers where they develop.[1]
  3. Become friends with your vacuum cleaner. While the loose, potentially flea-infested items are being washed, arm yourself with a vacuum and suck the flea life out of every surface, nook and cranny you can find. While you're doing this, send the pet(s) outside, or confine them to the bathroom, so that any fleas they're carrying won't jump onto the surface you just vacuumed. Also, while flea collars aren't the best choice for your pet, sticking one in the vacuum cleaner helps to kill off the buggers that you've sucked up so they can't come back out to haunt you. Here are some spots to concentrate on: See Image

    - areas that don't get much exposure to sunlight (fleas like humid and cool spots)

    - anywhere that you find dried blood and feces (flea debris)

    - upholstered furniture (lift up those couch cushions)

    - crevices around baseboards and cabinets (that's where the eggs and larvae are probably hiding)

When the vacuum bag is full, seal it in a plastic trash bag and put it in a covered trash container, preferably outside. Otherwise, the little buggers can crawl out and make themselves cozy again.
  4. Give Fido or Fluffy a bath. They might hate you for it but not as much as you hate the fleas.

    • Choose a flea shampoo carefully. Anything with conventional insecticides (pyrethrins, permethrin, d-limonene, chlorpyrifos, or carbaryl) might irritate or harm your pet, and the people around it.[1]
    • Wash the neck first so that the fleas don't jump up to the head during the bath.[2]
    • Apply a flea-killing product, available as a flea-collar, a spot-on, or oral medication. If the collar contains only insect growth regulator (which prevents larvae from turning into adults, but does not affect the existing adults) use another treatment, such as a spot-on product, to control adult fleas. Often the collars can be irritating to the pet's skin and are sometimes ineffective. A prescription strength (from a vet) spot-on treatment works best.[1] The following products are not effective:[1]

      • Vitamin B1 (thiamine hycrochloride) supplements
      • brewer's yeast
      • herbal collars
      • ultrasonic devices
  5. Reclaim your back yard. Before letting the pet(s) outside, prune foliage and trim grass to expose flea larvae to sunlight.[3] Look around. Do you see any dark, moist spots? Find a way to expose them to sunlight, if you can.
  6. Follow up. This is the most critical step because if you skimp on it, all your efforts from your previous steps will be undone. The eggs that survived will hatch, and the entire cycle will begin again. Do the following until you find no traces of fleas on your pets or in your home:

    • Vacuum thoroughly every other day - since fleas can develop resistance to insecticides, vacuuming regularly is essential in order to bring them under control[1]
    • Mow the lawn regularly
    • Wash pet bedding in hot, soapy water at least once a week

[edit ] Tips

  • When checking your pets for fleas, use a fine-toothed comb specifically designed to remove fleas. A flea is covered with tiny hairs that allow them to "grip" onto the host's fur. Using a comb with teeth that are close enough together that the flea can't slip through is the most effective way to dislodge them. A comb designed for another purpose or a brush won't remove all the fleas.[4]
  • Frontline works well, you can buy it at the local Petsmart or Petco.
  • Another product which works well is available from your vet. It is a pill named Comfortis which is administered once per month. It poisons the fleas which bite your dog and kills the flea within a few hours of ingestion.
  • Sevin Dust sprinkled in your yard may help kill and prevent fleas. Sevin should not be used indoors or on pets.[5]
  • You can also use a shallow pie pan half full of water and a teaspoon of veg. oil in it. Place a light over the pan and darken the room. The fleas will come to the light and jump in the pan of oil and water and be trapped and will drown. Works very well if used in a very dark room.

Warnings

  • When using any chemical, follow the instructions carefully.
  • Make sure that everyone - especially children - washes their hands right before eating, since swallowing a flea infected with tapeworm can, well, get you your very own tapeworm.[4]
  • If you do choose to use frontline and it gets on you, wash your hands, just as a precautionary.

To truly get rid of fleas, you need to treat the pet, house, and where you walk the pet to eliminate if the pet is taken outside.  Make sure that everything is done at the same time to be effective.  An easy way to do this is get your vet to wash and treat your pet while you treat the house and grounds.  Most house products require people and pets to be vacant for at least 2 hours after treatment.  Make sure you wash all pet bedding, cloth toys, etc., in hot water that same day.  Put flea powder or cut off a 2 inch portion of a flea collar and put into the collection bag of your vacuumn for control of hatching eggs.  It is never easy to get rid of fleas totally.  Once you are rid of your infestation and if your pet is a dog and it is walked all over, try spraying Adams Flea Mist on the dog before entering your house after each walk.  This may seem expensive and time consuming, but when the fleas start biting you or your guests it will be worth it.  A good rule of thumb is if you see one flea, there already are 100 in the environment.    P.S.  Fleas have a three week cycle and you may have to repeat every three weeks a couple of times to be totally successful.  Best of luck.

I think Frontline works best, and usually that is enough to solve the problem. Starting about now when spring begins seems to be the time they hatch most! If you don't do it now then by August they will explode all over your house!!With Frontline it kills the ones where they sleep and mostly they will always attack your dog or cat before anything else! And it seems to work with the minimum danger to humans or pets. Foggers are last resort in my mind!! Be very careful around food areas(you and your pets),and any where you prepare foods and your pets waterbowls are.

Pagan Nature Lover

Since being green is so much in the rage, you may want to try something a little more Earth friendly.

You did not become infested overnight, and this 'cure' will not kill the fleas in 5 minutes like the harsh chemicals might, but it is also SAFE for pets, BIRDS and children. (Birds are sensitive to most any chemical, and I have 5)

The wonder cure?

Cinnamon.

Sprinkle ground cinnamon on your carpets, couch, bed, anything fabric. Plus the grass outside. You need to reapply after each rain and periodically after they have gone.

Cinnamon oil in a spray bottle, I spray wood that I don't mind if it stained a bit, but it never did. The cinnamon oil around the doorframe also kept wasps from wanting to come in.

Cinnamon oil in an alcohol base (vodka, LOL) for all the places you don't want to spray the oil based.

Stick cinnamon tucked into pet bedding, under your bed, etc.

Others are right, you must treat your home, yard and pet to be effective. You also don't want to take you pet on a walk near places where you think he may have picked up fleas.

If your living room is really bad (mine always was, they love the living room, sun shining in, making warm spots. They are attracted to warm spots, heat= blood to their way of thinking. I use a bowl of warm water with a drop of dishsoap in it. Suspend a lightbulb that gets warm over the bowl. The fleas are attracted to the heat of the bulb (you have to use a 'regular' bulb that gets hot) and fall into the water. The soap keeps them from jumping or floating on the water so they drown.

Throw the water out in the lawn or down the commode, but you can see the little dead flea bodies in the bottom of the bowl! (It is very satisfying!)

I have 3 cats, and did this last summer. I am still flea free.

Good Luck!

I agree with #3, Frontline Plus is the most amazing product! Our house was suddenly infested. It seemed like over night.  I couldn't even sleep , because I could feel them jumpin on my face. We spent hundreds of dollars on bombs, shampoos, dips, powders, sprays,  home remedies, we had tried everything you could imagine, with little or no results. A friend told me about the Frontline Plus, and within a couple of hours of putting it on the dogs the entire house was flea-free. Seriously, not only had it gotten rid of the fleas on the dogs, it had cleared the entire house! I was shocked! And most of all I was so grateful, I will never use anything else!

To completely get rid of fleas you need a robust treatment plan for both your pet and house.  Invest in a good flea shampoo and medicine and combine that with some natural flea control techniques like food supplements.  Make sure you vacuum regularly and consider placing some flea traps around the house.

Fix Fleas was invited by Yedda to answer this question.

I simply used Borax.  I have used it for serveral years (sprinkling it down behind the cushion in the sofa and chairs and around the house) in the house and rubbing it on the dogs.  It didn't seem to bother them at all and it WORKED for me and my dogs.

Want a Moist Turkey? Brine It. Now.

Have you ever ordered roast turkey when dining in a really good restaurant with a great chef? If you have, then you’ve probably wondered how they manage to keep the meat so tender and moist. Is it a secret ingredient, or perhaps some amazing piece of hugely expensive, professional cooking equipment? Actually, it’s neither. It’s all done by brining! Brining is the very simple and inexpensive process of “marinating” the bird in a salt solution infused with aromatic herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables. The salting process encourages very deep, cellular moisture penetration, which basically means less drying out during roasting...resulting in a moister bird.
