Restart windows xp in safe mode

Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32

Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32\dllcache

In your task bar there is  an ICON for the Microsoft Genuine.  Right click this icon and there is a setting modify notification settings.  This will take you to a Microsoft website and you can change your notification settings there.  Until you get a genuine version of Windows though you will not be able to receive any updates or security patches from Microsoft.  If you bought your version from a vendor there is a chance that you can get a free genuine version of Windows from Microsoft.  If not the genuine key from Microsoft is $150.00US.

I hope that this helped you.

They're coming to take me away, Ha-haaa!

Advanced .NET Debugging Blog

My personal blog

After having to deal with a lot of bad press and other pressures from various places, Microsoft posted a detailed knowledge base article that shows how to uninstall the WGA tool that was installed with your patch.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921914

Of course, this is not a replacement for actually buying a legal copy of Windows (they have a good deal in the WGA site).

If you can't afford it or don't want spend money on it, perhaps you should look at other operating systems such as Linux. I heard Ubuntu is really nice and works well without configuring anything.

A more simple method I used, which doesn't actually remove the program though, was to download Autoruns (www.sysinternals.com) and disable:

"WgaLogon    Windows Genuine Advantage Notification    (Verified) Microsoft Corporation    c:\windows\system32\wgalogon.dll"

I am using a legal version of windows but this program would constantly bug me about updating to SP2.  I don't know if this will help you with your problem but it got rid of that stupid program from running :)

hey

this program is called removeWGA and according to their website it says:
"RemoveWGA enables you to remove the Microsoft "Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications" tool, which is calling home and connect to Microsoft servers every time you boot or every two weeks"

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1979756,00.asp (the story about the program)
