I have a good resume, but what else do I need?

Besides presenting a good resume, what are some other things I can do to stick out among all the others when applying for work?  Should I bring something special to interviews?

Great that you are interested in trying to succeed in getting employment.  Finding a job, and a good job, can be even more more work than an actual job.  It takes hard work, tenacity, and confidence.

But when you are applying for work with a resume, you have not done enough.

There is the networking and pitching yourself which is essential!

For the resume though:  did you write a cv specific to the role and the company?  Did you frame your resume towards the job?  How did you show anyone reading it that you have the skill sets to actually do the job and make life easier for the person managing you?

Did you have a follow up call?  Did you have the names who you will be working for or reading your resume?   If you did talk to anyone, did you send a thank you letter about the conversation you had?

When you show up for interviews, do you have any presentation material related to the job?  For instance, on something that demonstrates you have the experience for the role?  Did you remember to make a great impression on the receptionist and admin staff when you are there?  Did you remember to write down all the names of the people interviewing you and reconfirm their last names with reception so you can send them thank you letters?  Did you dress appropriately for the environment where you would be working?  Did you ask questions at the end of the interview (e.g. what would my first 3 priorities for the first 6 months in joining the firm?) so you can lead back to show how you can help them ( The second priority is what I am able to do quite easily, in my time in xxxx I finished a related project in 4 months).

There is a lot to cover more than resumes.  I would suggest you find the most succesful people in your family and circle of friends and ask them for a face to face meeting on how to go about each and every step in a job search.  If anyone tells you that its seeing a want ad, sending a resume, interview then an offer, find someone else.

make sure u had other expert eyes look it over before u say u have a good resume.  u want to make yourself a portfolio.  depending on what jobs u r looking 4, u will want to include samples of the work u have done eg. if u r into art, then show them some art!  in your portfolio that u take to the interview, make sure u also include the following which shows that u r organized and prepared:- several copies of resume, references, a salary history.

of course u need to send cover letters, research the companies, so in the interviews it shows u did ur homework and u know something about them.  prepare at least 10 good interview questions to ask on a flash card, research answers to possible interview questions, be sharp, on time, don't be late, strong hand shake, be confident and ask for the job if u want it.  don't forget to send a thank u note and follow-up after.

there is lots more i could tell u, this is only some of it.  for more info., go online or book stores for info. on job hunting, resumes, interviews, careers.

along with a good resume, you are also going to need a good cover letter. most companies will not even look at a resume if there is no cover letter attached to it
