What can I do to replace Sudafed?

The doctor told me to stop taking sudafed because it is addictive. However, I can only sleep if I can breathe out of my nose. What can I do to clear my nose before going to sleep?

I have suffered from allergies for years now. And my sinuses get worse during winter. I use SinuCleanse and Breathe Right Nasal strips to sleep better at night.  I also have a humidifier on every night and it has made the difference.

Here is a good article to read with a lot of natural remedies that are not addictive.

I've had the same problem for years.  Neosynephrine nose drops &/or Breathe Right strips are the only dependable "cures" I've found.

Live life to the fullest.

I've had success with 4Way Nasal Spray. It's been great clearing up my nose right before I go to sleep.

Even when all else has failed you...there will always be love.

Claratin is my allergy medicine of choice :) I recommend the melting pills. Each does is 1 pill that lasts 24 hours and works great =]

If you can't breathe through your nose, you must have an anatomical obstruction. It may be allergy, or something like a deviated septum or nasal polyp. See an ear, nose and throat doctor to help sort out the problem.

Many nasal sprays, 4Way included, are just as addictive as systemic remedies such as sudafed.  They reason they are addictive is that they cause a "rebound reaction" which makes the nasal passages swell up when the spray is not used.

Frown Sometimes, the rebound will occur in as little as a few days, but breaking the cycle can take weeks.  Does 4Way help? Of course it does if used occasionally for short periods. For a long term solution to your breathing problems, no.  You will burn your nasal tissues, which can result in scarring and may require surgery.  Use a saline spray, breathe right nasal strips, a hypoallergenic pillow with a case that is washed every few days in hot water, and elevate the head of your bed.  Listen to your doctor, and see an otolaryngologist if need be. (Ear, nose and throat specialist.) Good luck.  Kiss

Dr Oz, who has been on Oprah several times, recomends the Neti-pot.

It may look weird, but it helped my hubbie.  He has allergies and has even had polyps removed from his sinuses.  Nothing helped.  He uses the Neti-pot which washes out your sinuses and he no longer takes medicine, and his snoring has significantly decreased.  I included the link.  They cost about 15 bucks at the pharmacy.

Keep a window open at night......retains good ventalation, gets rid of bacteria in the room which can interfere w/breathing. Also rub a little baby Vicks Vapo rub under your nose on occasion,,not every night.
