Do you remember Lou Rand Hogan's Gay Cookbook, from 1965?

Hi - I'm a graduate student in American Studies, and I'm doing research on the 1965 book The Gay Cookbook by Lou Rand Hogan. I've found out about the publishing history of the book, and about Lou Rand Hogan himself (thanks in large part to Susan Stryker and Martin Meeker's wonderful reissue of Hogan's novel, The Gay Detective (a.k.a. Rough Trade). But I've been wondering if there's anyone out there (gay or straight) who remembers purchasing/reading/reading about The Gay Cookbook and Hogan in the 1960s and early 1970s? I'm curious to know more about the audience for the cookbook, and would be delighted to hear any anecdotes. Thanks very much.

Stephen

Surprisingly, I just wrapped a copy of the cookbook to give to a friend for his 70th birthday tonight.  I've had a copy since the late 60s and was able to find a copy signed by Lou Rand Hogan who gave it to Jeanne?  It was a huge conversation piece back in the dark ages and the recipes are actually fun and easy. I came out in the early 60s and my circle of friends in Manhattan all had a copy.

Hi Chucklicht - That's fascinating! I'd love to hear more. Please send me a private message via Yedda if we can talk more about this. Thanks!

I own a copy. It belonged to my late lover who was a chef. It's a funny book and, yes, the recipes are real and can be prepared. Like chucklicht said, easy and fun. Not sure i would go that far, but then, I hate to cook. How the hell would I know?
