A foolish heart will call on you to toss your dreams away, then turn around and blame you for the way you went astray. - Grateful Dead, Foolish Heart

Just because people have abused religion, persecuted others because they weren't accepting of the fact that others existed who were different than they were, and because people have used religion as an excuse to do terrible things.... it doesn't mean that religion itself isn't a good thing, to those who believe in it.  There is nothing wrong with believing in a god, with believing that there is something greater than be are, in wanting to pray for better.  I think that the problem is really people, not religion.  Look at what happened in the Holocaust.  Should we say that it's the fault of Christianity and Judaism, that the Christian Germans decided to try to annihilate the Jews... that this was the fault of the existence of the religions?  No, the reason why this happened was because one asshole decided to convince a nation that having blond hair and blue eyes somehow made people more worthy of being on this planet.  You can't blame god for the mistakes of man.

You have emphasized all the evils that result from a corrupted religion. Actually, religion was always a unifying factor and offered many people relief from their suffering.
