Is recycling helping?

How does recycling slow world resources exploitation? Anybody has any information, figures on recycling. Is it helping at all? Is it slowing the process? Is it relevant at all do to human consumption?

The problem with recycling is that it usually consumes a lot of energy. The better ways to slow down the demand for natural resources are reducing consumption and reusing products whenever possible.
