How do I recruit sponsors?

I need to recruit sponsors as part of the tuition for my daughter's entry into an Academy of the Performing Arts program. I must sell $1000.00 worth of advertising space for the programs Showbill which will circulate for 1 year. We can opt to pay the money out of pocket but that's not an option for me. The problem is that I have no idea where to start or even how to approach a business. Helpful tips or outright step by step dircetions would be appreciated.
