Is it alright for a recovered addict over one year sober to use cough syrup with a low dose of codeine for severe bronchitis?

I would have to say no speaking only for myself. I have an addictive personality.  It is something I will live with forever.  I give any meds to my husband he makes sure I take the correct dose.  If it was me I'd probably drink the whole bottle and I know it and he knows it.  Thank God I have someone like him.

is this prescribed by your doctor? if it is you have to tell him about your history.. and yes.. i agree with LMarie.. it is good to have a supporting hand... meaning? if you really have to take those... then.. have someone give you the right dose every time you have to take the meds.. don't take them alone.. let someone trustworthy give them to you..

If the person was a heroin addict, codeine might not have much of a therapeutic affect to justify the risk.  Their tolerance might prohibit pain relief at the recommended dose as it takes a long time to get the dopamine levels back to normal functioning.  Cough syrup without codeine should work as well, except for lack of pain relief.  On the plus side, the alcohol in it will help ease the pain and doesn't directly relate to their addiction.  Possibly a few shots of whiskey or brandy would be a decent substitute for the codeine.
