How do I recognize a vintage Midge/Barbie doll?

How do I recognize a vintage, (collectible), Barbie/Midge doll body? It is difficult to read, but on the right buttox it says TM Midge c 1962 under that it says Barbie c 1958, (I think), by Mattel, inc. The words Midge and Barbie are in cursive writing. There is a number 8 on the left buttox. Does this make any sense at all? I am not familiar with Barbies, (I was a Chatty Cathy girl), but I found this doll body with a group of old dolls at a barn/estate sale. Thanks!!
