"The Only Way to Get Smarter is by Playing a Smarter Opponent"

The first reality tv show was first aired in the 1950s. It featured a band leader and his family. The show actually started on the radio and was a about a husband and wife. The children were brought in and later, after it had transferred to tv, the kids grew up, got married and their wives were also in the show.

It was called The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and began on as a radio show in 1935 and lasted 31 years until it ended its tv run in 1966.

While "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" starred a real family, I don't think of it as a reality show, since it was a scripted sitcom.  My vote for first reality show is "Candid Camera."  But this is a good question for debate.  Wikipedia does a nice job at defining and tracing the history of

reality TV, including the issue of the first reality show.

All reality shows are somewhat scripted. If you ever watch the behind the scenes or interviews with people who have starred in reality shows they all say the same thing.  Directors "direct" them to do certain things and a lot of the material gets edited so much that what really happened isnt what the viewers see.  So while Ozzie and Harriet were somewhat scripted, the show was still the reality of their lives.  Their children were brought into the show, they grew up on the show, their wives were on the show.  How much more "real"ity does it get.

SpecalK makes a good argument.  (I gave it a thumbs up. Smile)  Still, my view is that "Ozzie and Harriet" wasn't a reality show.

It's a long way from "Ozzie and Harriet" to Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne.  The scenarios in "The Osbournes" were probably scripted to some degree.  But still, the cameras were recording their lives.  The members of the family didn't know the dialogue, events, and results in advance.  On "Ozzie and Harriet," every line and every action was scripted and directed.  That's why I'd call "Ozzie and Harriet" a sitcom, and "The Osbournes" a reality show.

The Real World has been on for eleventy billion years and in the earlier season wasn't as phony and obviously scripted as it is now.I have no idea what the first "reality show" was, good question.
