The real reason why NBC dropped Stone Phillips

Did NBC really fire Stone Phillips because they couldn't afford his salary anymore? None of the reports says anything about the two sides trying to reach a compromise, which makes me think that they didn't really want him there any more. Is there any other indication that supports this hunch?

Everybody's real polite about everything and has only good things to say about the other party, so probably yeah, there is some dirt we're not being allowed to watch...

They didn't breach their contract with him, just didn't renew it, so I guess any compromises that were supposed to happen should have taken place long before now. They say thy don't want to pay for two anchors where one is enough. I'm sure they're right, but it still wouldn't be the same.
