I get random sharp pains

This definitely doesn't sound normal. I think you need to see your family doctor and have him refer you to a specialist so you can figure out what it is that that is causing these sharp pains. Good luck!

Even if your dad had similar troubles it doesn't mean you necessarily suffer from the same condition. Only a doctor can really get to the bottom of what you're experiencing. I would go see him sooner rather than later and don't feel you're waisting his time. That's what he's there for.

Sometimes disc problems in the spine are manifested through pain in odd places. An MRI of the spine would be the test to get.
