Some people are strange like that. You should just ask him not to do it in the future.

Turn off the television and teach your children how to think.

It could be habit, or he may have physical difficulties of which you are not aware.

Perhaps holding the phone bothers his hands, perhaps he cannot hear as well unless it is on speaker, perhaps he wants you to be privy to his conversation.

There is no true way to know, unless you ask!

Say, "I've noticed that whenever we're together and you get a telephone call, you put it on speaker phone. How come?"

Depending upon his answer, you may decide to let it go (and just deal with it) or you can follow up by politely asking him to stop doing it in your presence.

Good luck!

Just ask him why. Maybe he wants to show off that he has friends, that he is not cheating on you (if you are his girlfriend) or simply because he has hearing problems. I have a friend who does the same thing and it turns out he has some hearing difficulty he doesn't want anyone to know about.

Thank you for the reply....I am his friend of 35 years....He has no hearing problem and I know the same friends. I was looking more for the psychology....like in secure ...self esteem...something drives this person to do this constantly and he has had some bad experiences that he refuses to accept. You are right on in your suggestion to ask . I have and his response is uh well i thought you wanted to talk to them. It was fun...Those are his ansewers.

As a last resource, go along with it. It is not harming either him or you. So, just play stupid and cheerful, it works.
