Hi, Im 19 y/o and everytime I go out to crowded places as the centre of the city I feel people laugh at me, and I do not know if it is because Im funny , I feel terrible, like crying, I do not know if it is my imagination. Nobody has ever told me Im funny that s why Im confused. sometimes I feel afraid of socialising and going out to a club, I feel afraid of people looking at me, because I think they are going to laugh. Im good at school, consider my self prettty but really hate when people lok at me.

First of all, you need to work on your self confidence. If you are making efforts to make people laugh and be funny, it is most likely that they are laughing WITH you and not at you! If you are feeling insecure and paranoid in a social setting, confide in a very close friend of yours and share your feelings with them. I am sure that they would be able to assure you that are seeing something that is not really there. Unfortunately, when people are not completely comfortable with who they are as a person, they sometimes project and assume that other people don't like them either. You need to learn to love yourself and then you will find that other people do and will as well! Good luck.

If you could see what I've seen with your eyes.....

At 19, many people haven't had the life experience to get past and get over the self-conscious feeling that they are the center of attention and everyone is finding fault with the clothes or the hair or the big Adam's apple.  The key is self-confidence, and to overcome lack of self-confidence you have to make at least one big step in your life; sing, speak up, crack a joke, state an opinion. Make sure you read newspapers and good books so that you can speak articulately and form opinions based on facts.  You may only be 19 but being armed with knowledge can help you in social situations.  On the other hand, I suffer from what they now so cleverly call social phobia, and I will probably always have trouble going somewhere without a good friend to watch my back.  But I have gotten up in front of audiences to sing and play my guitar, I've played the organ at weddings, and I've given speeches.  You have to work hard to overcome your self-consciousness by finding something you're good at and doing the best you can do. Look in the mirror and see yourself, not what you think other people are seeing.
