A prescription for anxiety that works long term

I'm a 71 year old male in a constant state of stress and anxiety. I go to bed with it at night, I wake up with it in the morning. I'm on 05 mgm of Clonazepam twice a day but they wear off and just aren't working well for me. I've been on them for 5 years and don't quite know why because the first thing mentioned that they are for is seizures and I've never had one in my life. Isn't there a prescription anti-anxiety pill out there that will last long term through accumulation and see me through the days and nights without the mental pain I go through on a non-stop basis. I'd love to live my life without thinking of "me" all the time and the mental anguish I'm going through. If you can help, please do.

Hi,

You need to see your doctor and discuss with him your concerns.  Maybe he can change the medicine you're taking.

Wink  Headphones: you can listen to music you like or keep other noise out.

If you have been on 0.5 mg of clonazepam twice a day for 5 years it is time for re-evaluation. Sometimes things have a way of slipping by the wayside and we, as patients need to address them. Long term meds often need to be increased in dosage as our bodies have adjusted to them, thus they need adjusting.  Also, if you are getting them prescribed by your primary care physician you would fare better with a professional/psychiatrist. One more thing; there are alot of meds used for more than one thing (aka off label uses). Thus, just because a person doesn't have a seizure disorder doesn't neccessarily mean it's being used for that purpose. There are also many other medications that will help you if current one does not.

Stressed out!

What is stress all about? Of course, I do not have all the answers, but a famous psychiatrist named Alfred Adler, an early associate of Sigmund Freud, strongly believed that personality difficulties are rooted in a feeling of inferiority that derive from restrictions on an individual's need for self-assertion.

Let me put this in simple terms: sometimes you need to blow your top.

Do you ever think about some of your replies to an aggressive statement? Do you ever wonder what would have happened if you had expressed your real feelings? Do you ever lay in bed and think about what happened during the day and how you could have handled it better?

Tension builds from frustration. If what I asked above applies, think about risking someone's anger. Read more about this in Gigenrenzer's 'Thinking Rationality in teh Real World".
