There is no reason to expect that laser exposure poses any hazard during pregnancy. The light energy does not penetrate deeply into the skin. Safety issues with lasers have more to do with protection of one's eyes to prevent the beam from causing eye damage.

How Can I Get Rid of This Yeast Infection?

QUESTION Dear Midwife, I have had a yeast infection throughout my entire pregnancy. My doctor has tested me for STD's and all are negative. He has prescribed metro gel to me. I have used this every few months. I am now on my 32 week and am using this prescription every other week. Is there something stronger I can use or something I can change or do different to help? ANSWER Metrogel will not cure a yeast infection, it's for a bacterial infection and can actually cause a yeast infection. Have you tried Diflucan (the yeast pill)? There are also over the counter yeast preparations and a heavy duty vaginal cream (Terazol) that might be appropriate. If all these fail, borax washes help some women and the yeast can be cultured to see what will kill it. Other things you can do for yourself include eliminating sugars as much as possible (no soda or juices for sure, only two fruits and two dairies per day) and eating more vegetables and proteins. Good luck! -- Cynthia, CNM. PhD. Send Page To a Friend

Wrongly Diagnosed Miscarriage?

QUESTION Dear Midwife, ANSWER It's probably ok to wait until the first of the year, but of course we'd prefer that you be seen sooner, especially since there is a dating issue, and the best way to solve that is to do an u/s at about 7 weeks or so. The longer you wait, the less accurate they are, but they can almost always tell you which *month* you conceived in, even at 20 weeks! My best guess from what you say (since you still had a negative test on 10/5) is that this is a new conception. But there is really no way to tell for sure without an u/s. Congratulations! -- Cynthia, CNM. PhD. read more

Risks of Down Syndrome

QUESTION Dear Midwife, I am 34 years old and currently 20 weeks pregnant. At 18 weeks I had an anatomical ultrasound (I assume this is also what is referred to as a level II ultrasound). The u/s doctor told me there were 2 EIF soft markers on the baby's heart and that my chances of having a baby with down syndrome were 1:220 or so. Immediately thereafter, I had an appointment with my OB who gave me a lot of good information. I then went for the AFP test. Those results came back as 1:5000 for down syndrome and 1:1000 for other trisomy birth defects. ANSWER When they say "soft markers," that's what they mean, they do not have hard data that say that there is a problem. It sounds like even in the very worst case scenario you've been presented, you have a 219 out of 220 chance of having a normal baby. I'd go with that! -- Cynthia, CNM. PhD. read more

Temperature while Pregnant

QUESTION Dear Midwife, Is it normal that women who are pregnant have a slightly higher body temperature than non pregnant women? I been kinda sick and was worried. I had 98.7 on the thermometer by mouth and I thought that you usually add 1 to it so that would have been 99.7 but wanted to know if this was a normal temperature while pregnant? ANSWER It is not a dangerously high temperature in any case, so I don't think you have to worry. Do you know what your normal pre-pregnancy temperature was? Some women just run "hotter" than others, and some women are a little warmer in pregnancy, as you suspect. -- Cynthia, CNM. PhD.
