Can You Get Pregnant the First Day of Your Period?

Finding out you're pregnant can be wonderful or terrifying depending on where you are in life. Whether you're shouting for joy or shouting expletives, learning that you are pregnant is an emotional experience..

Ovulation
  • Every month a woman's body releases an egg. This process is called ovulation. The ovaries usually release an egg on anywhere from day 11 to day 21 of the menstrual cycle. Timing varies for each woman.
  • As a woman's body prepares to nourish life each month, the lining of her uterus thickens. This lining is shed if the woman's egg is not fertilized. Menstrual blood consists of this lining. A woman cannot get pregnant on the first day of menstruation.
  • Cycles can vary in length. Some women have cycles that last 21 days, while others have cycles that last as long as 45 days. To figure out your cycle length, count the days from the start of one period to the start of the next.
  • You are most fertile right after you ovulate. An egg can survive anywhere from 12 to 24 hours. Sperm can survive about 36 hours.
  • When you ovulate, your temperature rises slightly, and the mucus of your cervix becomes thick and sticky.
  • Use protection if you do not want to become pregnant. Tracking your cycle is not foolproof and does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Women can have bleeding in between periods that can be misunderstood as menstrual bleeding
