Is Polygamy allowed by ISLAM? and Why?

Polygamy is allowed by Islam, with certain limitations. First of all, only Muslim men are allowed to marry more than one wife. Muslim women cannot marry more than one husband. Furthermore, Muslim men are limited to marrying no more than four wives.

Polygamy in Islam is a hard to practice. It  is allowed only if a man has obtained permission from his first or existing wives. Also there shall be a needy explainantion and also if the man is wealthy enough to sponsor and treat all the wives equally, including time share etcetera. But those days are over and not many could keep compliance with the rules anyway.

Certainly seems that 4 wives should be enough for most any men, even if not enough for Tiger Woods.  

With such polygamy in AMERICA, we would sure cut down on all the mistress and prostitue problems seen so often (Clinton, Woods, Sen Edwards, Gov of NY, Gov of SC to name 5 well known "cheaters").

That would also eliminate so many divorces if the women would accept letting their husbands have a "reasonable" number of wives like the muslims do.
