How do i polish stainless steel?

hello, i am trying to polish stainless steel 304-2b to a mirror finish, is this possible?  i am afraid that i have totally messed it up.  it looks really scratched up and maybe even pitted.  i have tried just about everything, sandpaper 50-1600 grit, palm sander, compounds, buffing wheel, still looks horrible, any help or step by step instructions would be highly appreciated.

Use grinding discs. It brings out the real shine of stainless steel. I recommend you use Smith & Arrow (http://stores.shop.ebay.com/smith-and-arrow__W0QQ_armrsZ1 ). Does the job well and it's cheap. Cheapest I know. Good luck.
