How to plant an organic garden...for the beginner!

For the beginner...how to plant an organic garden. I have never planted a vegetable garden..I want to start by planting tomatoes, beans, lettuce, herbs, squash, maybe others.  I have about 8 feet by 10 feet, mostly sunny area in the Piedmont of North Carolina.  What do I do first?  I have no compost...how could I start an organic garden with some healthy results?  Thanks  P.S. I need to keep it pretty simple as a beginner and as inexpensive as possible.   Diane
