Best places to travel in Europe in mid-January?

What are some nice places to travel to in Europe in mid-January?  I want to go to a place that's pretty with mountains, and interesting culture, fun things to see, etc?  I haven't really been anywhere in Europe so I have no idea where to go.  I only have something like 4 or 5 days to take this vacation with my friend.  Budget also matters... I can't go somewhere that is going to cost a fortune for everything.

Love is the battery of life....

Hi,

Why go to cold freezing Europe, come to Israel.  If you are lucky you'll have nice warm shinny days even at mid January.  Israel is a small country, with many attractions, ideal for 4-5 days tour....  not too expensive either.  If you go for it, I'll be ready to give you some more advise.  Here you'll find a very nice site.
Best regards,

I have spent a lot of time in Israel before.  I've never really been to Europe, just Poland, and to me that doesn't count.  What places in Europe are actually nice enough to walk around outside and enjoy in the winter?  I don't mind a little cold.

Hi,

OK.  How about Slovenia.  I have been there recently, it's a cute country.  small enough for enjoying a 4-5 days tour (with a visit to Plitvitse, in Croetia, that's a MUST - resembles Heaven !!!!).  If you want several tips, I'll give you.
Enjoy,

Hey Oron... I'd love some tips, of where to go and what to do there.  I found this really cool site, and it looks like a very nice place.  My friend and I love the nature, mountains, random trips, culture, etc.  It looks like there's a lot of that here.  Where did you stay when you were there?  Did you need to rent a car?  What are the prices like there?

Hi,

I took an orgenized tour.  You can rent a car.  The roads are good and the road signs are very clear.  At that time of the year you'll easily get all kinds of hotels (ranging from cheap to expensive).  The further you go out of the popular sites the lower the prices, and the deeper you leave the main road the prices go down.  There are many rooms to let (it is marked outside, friquently in the native language.  As far as I remember is is "Sobe" [I am not sure]).  Highly recommended (and you get to know the people as well) for very reasonable prices.  Sites: Blade.  A very nice, relatively small lake.  Take a walk around it.  On the hill next to it there is a nice church with a nice view and a nice trail to walk in the mountains.  At the city don't forget to taste the famous "Creamshnit" (3 stories high.... send a bite to me.....).  From the city there is a nice river that is a nature reserve (2-3 hours, worth any minute !) Don't miss it.  Go to the north west some 25 k"m to another lake ("Bohine").  Nice view from the mountain (take the mountain train).  The statue of "Zlotogrod" (the golden deer) = the symbol of their nature reserves.  Very nice.  Visit the city of Lubliana (recomended on Saturday, there is a "flee market" along the riverside).  Visit the famous caves of "Postoinitse"....  don't miss it with it's gorgiouse Stalegnite and stalegtites (hope I spelled it well).  At the far west north end there are ski resorts, if you like it (might be crowded).  Cross the border to Croetia and spend a whole day at "Plitvitse".  A place that resembles heavens, 16 lakes, with different colours, A-M-Z-I-N-G different from all what you ever saw B4.  "Wonder around" with your car in those small fisherman villages at Slovenia... without planning....  enjoy the landscape, try the food, enjoy the local wines.  Remember that you might get bad weather.
Enjoy !.  It's a great place.  I am sure you won't regret.

European travel can be tough in the winter. Most of Europe is quite cold. If you do not mind the cold and are looking for pretty mountains and culture, the best bets are Austria, Switzerland and France. The alps run through these countries and are absolutely beautiful. However, in January, I would probably go to the Canary Islands. It will be warm there even when it is cold in the rest of Europe.
