Why does a football that is thrown for a longpass ...

Why does a football that is thrown for a longpass first point upward and then turn downward at about half way  through its flight? The spin should have a gyroscopic effect on the ball so why doesn't it remain spinning on the  same axis for the entire flight?

The football is following a trajectory. The spin enables it to follow the trajectory like a shell from a cannon. When a shell is fired it begins and ends the trajectory always pointing forward.
