I think that the most effective way to defend yourself is Krav Maga. It works in multiple situations and teaches defense against weapons and crowds and such.

experience is age,and open all doors that are in front of you.

the style that you choose to study,i studied ti kwon do when i was younger and decided it was to agressive for me,with bad knees and all if i ever took up any martial arts program again it would be kempo a lot less kicking involved,as with any style you choose you have to be a serious student not just weekends,it takes a lot of dedication on a students part,to me one style is as good as the next, any training that can get you out of a situation with little or no injury is good, but remember always martial arts is for self protection only.
